When Learning Something New Sharpens What You Already Do: A gener8tor Skills Conversation with Brian Tran

In this episode of our gener8tor Skills Impact Series, Anne Nadel sat down with Brian Tran, a Security Specialist working in IT and cybersecurity within the federal space, to explore how stepping into data analytics helped him uncover transferable skills he was already using in his work.

After completing our Data Analytics Skills Accelerator, Brian reflected on how taking on a new challenge helped him look at his work from a different perspective. Through hands-on learning, flexible pacing, and ongoing support, he was able to connect data analytics concepts directly to the work he was already doing in IT and cybersecurity. It sharpened how he analyzes information, visualizes patterns, and communicates insights more clearly to support real-world decision-making. The experience helped Brian recognize that building new skills does not mean starting over, but instead building with more intention on top of what he already knew.

A few highlights from the conversation:

  • Self-paced learning made it possible to build new skills while balancing work and life

  • Hands-on practice with tools like Excel and Python revealed how data skills translate directly into IT and cybersecurity roles

  • Data analytics strengthened his ability to analyze, visualize, and clearly communicate information for better decisions

  • Ongoing coaching and career support helped reinforce those skills well beyond graduation

Brian’s message says it all: “Try something new, especially when it aligns with your interests. You may already have more strengths than you realize.”
