Before you apply, we’d like to tell you about a change we’ve made to our Milwaukee 2019 accelerator.
This Fall, we’re going to do something new with gener8tor Milwaukee. Rather than recruiting five existing startups from around the country to participate in our tradititional, 12-week accelerator, we’re going to invest $100K into each of five teams to build startups completely from scratch.
We will work with these teams for 16 weeks (rather than 12), and each startup created during the program will have gener8tor as a partner on the cap table (~20%) and in the business.
To build these startups, gener8tor will solicit applications from indivdiauals and teams with the goal of forming or selecting five teams. Once the five teams are selected, gener8tor will invest $100K into each team and work with them one-on-one over the course of four months to identify and build a mutually agreed upon product with high-growth potential. Startup ideas will be sourced from the applicants themselves, gener8tor’s network and Project North corporate members.
To be clear, this program is open only to individuals or teams willing to build a startup completely from scratch in collaboration with gener8tor. Teams who apply with a clearly formed idea for a product, or an existing product, will not be considered.
Ideal teams will include between two and five individuals who exhibit the following characteristics:
Highly refined technical skills
Deep domain expertise in a particular industry, technology or field of study
Comfortability in situations of extreme uncertainty
Cross functional mix; technology, sales, design, development, marketing, etc.
The ability to commit 100% to entering a new legal entity that has yet to establish a business model
The unique skills, knowledge and domain expertise of each selected team will be leveraged in combination with gener8tor’s network of mentors, investors, corporate partners and sponsors to build these five startups.
This change will only affect gener8tor Milwaukee. Our other equity-based accelerator programs – The Brandery, gener8tor Minnesota or the OnRamp Insurance Accelerator – will continue to recruit nationally for existing startups to take through our traditional 12-week program.

Why change our model?
Over the past seven years, gener8tor has built its brand around its flagship, 12-week equity-based accelerator.
This program has performed exceptionally well, generating top quartile returns and enabling more than 81 entrepreneurs to secure nearly a quarter billion in follow-on financing. We’re extremely proud of its progress and to be ranked among the top programs in the country.
As we look to the future and roll out new programs tailored for different categories of entrepreneurs, however, we’ve also been examining new strategies to serve our gener8tor communities and the entrepreneurs we already work with.
The mission behind gener8tor and all its products has always been to build infrastructure that allows communities to reinvest in their best and brightest. By doing so, it has been gener8tor’s goal to create a virtuous cycle of new wealth and job creation that allows its communities to better compete nationally and eventually become wellsprings of innovation.
gener8tor’s strategy to serve this mission through its equity-based accelerators to-date has been to broker existing innovators and entrepreneurs to a national investment community while at the same time working to building better local investment infrastructure. This model is extremely effective, allowing a far higher rate of entrepreneurs to obtain the resources they need to reach their potential in these communities while also generating top quartile returns for its investors.
But this model hasn’t necessarily created entrepreneurs where they wouldn’t otherwise have existed. Nor have the unique domain expertise and talents of gener8tor’s communities been fully leveraged to most directly serve gener8tor’s mission.
So this Fall in our gener8tor Milwaukee 2019 program, we’re going to we’re going to invest $100k into each of five local teams to build startups completely from scratch.
By doing so, we hope to pioneer a new model for communities to invest in their citizens that directly encourages innovation by creating startups that wouldn’t have otherwise existed by using the existing resources in a given community. What better place to start than in our own backyard?
