A BlueTech accelerator built for the Great Lakes Region.

About the Northern Michigan BlueTech Accelerator

The Northern Michigan BlueTech Accelerator, Powered by gener8tor and anchored by 20Fathoms, is an intensive accelerator program based in Traverse City, MI. It is purpose-built for early-stage founders working on water, freshwater, and BlueTech innovation. The program combines gener8tor's proven accelerator curriculum with deep domain expertise, freshwater research infrastructure, and a regional investor community with a genuine stake in the future of water.

20Fathoms and gener8tor will recruit early-stage BlueTech startups from across the United States that are solving real problems in water, including infrastructure, treatment, monitoring, data, and climate-adjacent technologies.

Startups accepted into the program will have access to the broader 20Fathoms innovation community in Traverse City. Participating companies receive:

  • Individualized coaching and mentorship from gener8tor and 20Fathoms on company growth and investor readiness
  • Weekly strategy sessions, mentor introductions, and investor pitches
  • Connection to a regional and national network of BlueTech investors, operators, and domain experts
  • $1M+ in deals and perks from partners including AWS, HubSpot, Microsoft, and others
  • Post-program bridge support through the following spring, including workspace, startup coaching, and ongoing investor introductions
  • Opportunity for investment through the 20Fathoms investment fund, with more details below

The Northern Michigan BlueTech Accelerator's goal is that graduates will go on to participate in an investment accelerator or raise a seed round.

Why BlueTech?
Why Northern Michigan?

Traverse City sits at the center of the Great Lakes. It is home to 21% of the world's surface freshwater, working waterways for real-world testing, and a community that has been quietly building the infrastructure for a national BlueTech hub:

  • The Freshwater Research & Innovation Center opens on West Grand Traverse Bay in 2027.
  • NMC's Great Lakes Water Studies Institute is already producing marine technology talent recruited by companies around the world.
  • And 20Fathoms has spent years connecting Northern Michigan founders to the investors and partners who can help them scale.

This accelerator is your opportunity to be a part of the foundation of that ecosystem and get in on the ground floor before it's fully built.

Who Should Apply

The Northern Michigan BlueTech Accelerator is built for early-stage founders solving real problems in water: infrastructure, treatment, monitoring, data, and adjacent technologies. You should apply if:

  • You are a BlueTech founder.

If you're developing an innovative technology in the water sector, this accelerator is for you. Anything that can be tested, piloted, or applied in freshwater environments qualifies. We're broad on industry and specific on impact.

  • You're working towards your next commercialization milestone.

Maybe that means running your first pilot, landing a key customer, raising a round, or expanding into a new market. Whatever the next step looks like for your company, you're ready to move. You just need the right support, connections, and infrastructure to get there faster.

  • You have something real, even if it's early.

You don't need customers or revenue to apply. If you've got a proof of concept or an MVP and you're ready to start stress-testing it in the real world, we want to hear from you.

  • You're based in the U.S., though we have a particular interest in Michigan.

We're accepting applications from startups across the United States. That said, we're actively building the BlueTech ecosystem in Northern Michigan, so founders who are based here, or serious about growing a presence in the region, will receive strong preference in our selection process.

Potential Post-Program Investment

Participating companies have the opportunity to be considered for $150k+ post-program investment through 20Fathoms following the showcase, though pursuing investment is entirely optional and not a requirement of the accelerator. Selected companies who are interested may be invited to continue growing their businesses as part of the Traverse City region's emerging BlueTech ecosystem. Companies do not need to decide whether they wish to pursue funding prior to joining the program; those who do choose to explore this opportunity must be willing to establish a presence in the Traverse City region.
