How Support Turns Skills Into Career Momentum: A gener8tor Skills Conversation with Angelica Cervantes

Sometimes the biggest career shifts start with staying curious and open to what’s possible.

In this episode of our gener8tor Skills Impact Series, Anne Nadel sits down with Angelica Cervantes, Chief Operating Officer at YWCA San Antonio, to explore what skills training can unlock when people are supported as whole humans, not just learners.

Angelica shares how YWCA San Antonio first connected with gener8tor Skills through the City of San Antonio’s Ready to Work program. Through that partnership, one of YWCA’s own team members enrolled in the Data Analytics course while continuing to work full time.

What followed was a clear example of how skills training connects directly to real world impact. The participant applied what she learned on the job, stepped into a data analyst role, and continued to grow within the organization. Today, she oversees data processes and analytics across the entire organization, supporting better decision making and long term operational clarity.

Angelica’s perspective highlights that access to training is only one part of the equation. Real progress happens when learning is paired with flexibility, application, and the right support systems so people can fully engage and complete the journey they start.

A few themes from the conversation:

  • Skills training is most effective when paired with real world application, not theory alone

  • Flexible and hands on learning makes upskilling possible alongside work and life responsibilities

  • Wraparound support like coaching, case management, and mental health services helps learners stay focused and finish strong

  • When people feel supported, confidence grows and new career pathways open

Angelica’s message is simple and powerful. Stay curious. Curiosity sparks learning, innovation, and opportunities that may not be visible yet.
