The Wisconsin Tomorrow Small Business Recovery Grant program will award $420 million to small businesses impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. The program is intended to support businesses who are hardest hit by the pandemic and are key to Wisconsin making a strong recovery. The program is administered by the Wisconsin Department of Revenue (DOR) in collaboration with the Wisconsin Economic Development Corporation (WEDC) and is funded with money received from the federal government through the American Rescue Plan Act.

More information regarding the grant can be found here.

Art Collector Resources

Collecting art can be overwhelming, scary and unnecessarily difficult. gener8tor Art seeks to demystify the art collecting process, and cultivate new art collectors to support artists. The art collector resources consist of several webinars on the art market, with topics including buying art as an investment, art collecting strategies, tips for supporting local artists and art communities, and how to support the values of social justice and equity within an art collection.

An Introduction to the Art Market

Each webinar will be led by a speaker that explains different aspects of the art market or varied collecting strategies. In addition to webinars, participants in the series will also benefit from artist and gallery talks, where they can learn more about specific artists and gain opportunities to begin collecting their work.

The goal of this program is to educate potential art collectors about how to collect art responsibly, as well as to provide art collectors with the tools to build collections that have social impact and reflect their values. This series encourages collectors to support their local art communities by getting to know local artists, and facilitating the buying of art directly from artists, or local galleries. This program is intended for individuals who are new to art collecting, or experienced art collectors who are interested in developing their art collecting strategies.

John Riepenhoff, the director of the Green Gallery, and LaNia Sproles, a Milwaukee based artist, activist and curator, discuss the benefit exhibition I’ll Make You Sorry, cohosted by the Green Gallery and gener8tor Art. They discuss art curating and art collecting as a form of social activism.

 Past gener8tor Art Showcases

2021 gener8tor Art Virtual Showcase

The gener8tor Art Showcase is a virtual celebration of the 2021 gener8tor Art recipients: Hope Wang, Phoenix Brown, LaNia Sproles and Jessica Harvey. The artists will virtually present their work, showcase their recent projects and discuss their experience participating in the gener8tor Art accelerator program.

Phoenix Brown uses painting, printmaking and drawing to highlight dialogues around Black feminism, personal narrative and pop culture. She uses diverse mediums and methods of making to confront western art history’s portrayal of nature, still life, and the Black female body.

Jessica Harvey uses photography, video, sound, archival resources and objects constructed from everyday materials to create images and installations that focus on memory and place, with a particular emphasis on the role of women in personal or familial histories. Through humor and tragedy, Harvey  creates a new way of re-evaluating life, death and the mythology of our own history.

LaNia Sproles uses printmaking, drawing and collage to interwork philosophies of self-perception, queer and feminist theories, and inherent racial dogmas. Her work focuses on the black femme body as a location of trauma and compromised autonomy, while the figures in her work act as a reclamation of space as a queer Person Of Color.

Hope Wang specializes in weaving, screen-printing, painting and photography to create trompe l'oeil documentations of sites of industrial labour, including building facades that have been eroded, redacted or defaced. By focusing on these architectural “scars,” Wang explores how people form complicated relationships with the structures of their daily lives.

2020 gener8tor Art Virtual Showcase

The four artists who just completed this year’s program present their work and speak about how the Fellowship.art accelerator program impacted their artistic practice.

Tyanna Buie uses printmaking, sculpture and installations as a form of both narrative and non-narrative storytelling as Buie examines her personal and family histories. Through family memorabilia and documents sourced from family members, Buie revisits and revives previous impressions from past events.

Le’Andra LeSeur’s work explores how black, female identity is informed by the effects of regulated systems of oppression. Through visual media, installations and performances, LeSeur reclaims and dismantles stereotypes surrounding black identity.

Dakota Mace takes a contemporary approach to Diné (Navajo) weaving and beadwork. Mace’s work focuses on re-interpreting the symbolic abstractions of Diné creation stories, cosmologies and social structures, using a combination of traditional and non-traditional materials and techniques.

Open Kitchen is a Milwaukee-based art collective founded by Rudy Medina and Alyx Christensen, in partnership with Jean Yoon and Alan Medina. Open Kitchen stages events, installations, and a residency program that engages the public in critical cross-cultural conversations on food, identity and ecology.
